Woody's Five Ways to Improve Writing Write About What You Know - One must be familiar with the material before writing. That does not mean if one is unfamiliar with a subject that it is off-limits, it means he must RESEARCH! Organize Your Thoughts - Before one begins, there must be a process in which thoughts are put in order. Outline - After the subject has been chosen and organized, one must make an outline. Remember in the outline to include a strong opening and closing. Demonstrate Your Knowledge of Punctuation, Grammar, and Spelling - No matter how knowledgeable or eloquently your writing sounds, if the basic structure of punctuation and grammar is incorrect, your writing is less than amateur. You - Remember YOU are the author. As authors, one would never put his name on a piece of work that was not perfect, polished, and professional. Other elements discussed include purpose, audience, and voice. Woody's body is compared to the body of a manuscript (Woody's head represents the beginning; Woody's body represents the facts and details; Woody's tail represents the summary).
